I was interested in seeing Daybreakers only because I have not yet read a negative review of it. So here's mine!

Basically, the plot is that in 2009 there was an outbreak of something-that-turns-people-into-vampires, and by the year 2019, vampires run the world. Humans are bred and kept in captivity to be harvested for their blood, which vampires need or they go batshit (ha ha) crazy and mutate into these bat-things that fuck shit up.

The only problem is that they've hunted and captured humans to near extinction, and the supply of blood is rapidly dwindling. People begin mutating all over the world because of a blood shortage, and shit goes down.

The movie revolves around Ed Dalton (Ethan Hawke), who is a Hematologist for a giant pharmaceutical company who is working on a synthetic blood substitute. Unfortunately, nothing works. Eventually, he finds a cure for the vampirism itself...and the movie happens.

Anyway, after reading such glowing reviews, I was fairly disappointed in this movie. It didn't seem to be able to decide what kind of movie it was - it wasn't really drama, wasn't really action, wasn't really horror and not quite sci-fi.

Also, points off for very excessive use of LOUD, EAR-SPLITTING NOISES at unexpected times during the film to scare the audience. There were seriously moments when the entire theater was wincing and covering their ears, myself included.

To its credit, Daybreakers does give a different take on the traditional vampire movie while maintaining classic vampire things in a modern form (not able to be seen in mirrors, that sort of thing). It also comes really, really close to being an oil industry allegory.

All in all, it's okay if you're a fan of vampire movies, but definitely a rental.

This movie hadn't even shown up on my radar. The premise sounds pretty cool but...that's a pretty mediocre review.

I really like the premise as well. I'm a bit unsure that they didn't just sling this movie out there to make some quick money and suffered quality. Vampires are the cool movie thing now. Still looks interesting enough to rent as he mentioned.

*hugs DW* Its okay, I understand that with therapy you can learn to overcome the trauma of sitting through that.

I have been asked/hinted that a princess wants to see the newest one. *sigh* somebody send me a bottle or two of jack to wash the images away afterwards.

The new one is apparently nothing but shirtless, buff men. I think you might survive.

Awwww, the little Twilight girls are all growing up. I wonder how many installments there will be before we get a movie about Edward being a lying, cheating husband that wants to take away Bella's kids.

After seeing Daybreakers myself tonight, I concur with TLR.

The worst part was the damned music score. Seriously annoying. Although I do like Willem Defoe. I thought they had an interesting twist on the old story though.
